What is Invisalign?
Invisalign treatment is the process of wearing a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually straighten out your teeth without the usage of metal wires and brackets. Invisalign aligners are made out of a thin, clear flexible plastic that are custom made to adhere to your teeth perfectly. Your dentist creates a digital treatment plan that maps out the exact movement of your teeth in order to create the right amount of force to help straighten them out. Just like the name, Invisalign is virtually invisible. Many people don’t even notice that you’re wearing them, making them the perfect solution for adults wanting to perfect their own smile.
Depending on how complex your case is, the length of treatment will vary. Many people use Invisalign for about 12 to 18 months, and notice differences within the first few weeks. Your dentist will make sure that you are changing your aligners every so often to help insure that the treatment is taking place correctly.
How much does it cost?
Depending on if your insurance will cover some of the treatment or not, Invisalign is usually a bit more expensive than regular braces would be. Your dentist or orthodontist will be able to give you a better estimate of the price.
What restrictions will I have?
One of the best aspects of Invisalign is that you can remove your aligners any time you want, so you will never be restricted when it comes to eating or drinking. Unlike braces, you won’t have to avoid certain foods, you’ll just want to make sure that you’re not forgetting to floss so that food isn’t getting stuck in between your teeth, but you should be doing this Invisalign or not! You just want to make sure that you avoid chewing gum while you have your aligners in. Smoking will also stain them, so if you do smoke you’ll want to remove them for that too.
How do I take care of them?
In comparison to braces, Invisalign is much easier to maintain and take care of, but you still will need to take certain steps. When cleaning your aligners, your dentist may recommend the Invisalign Cleaning System, but you can also just brush them with a toothbrush and toothpaste, and just rinse them out, either one works. However, never use hot water when cleaning them since it could melt or warp the plastic. You also will want to make sure that you are brushing and flossing after every meal before placing your aligners back in. Certain foods will carry a residue, and could stain your teeth if the residue is transferred onto your aligners. If you lose or break one of your Invisaligns, make sure that you contact your doctor immediately so that it can be replaced and you can stay on track with your treatment.
What happens when I’m done with Invisalign?
Most dentists or orthodontists will recommend that you use a retainer after your treatment is completed in order to prevent your teeth from shifting back towards their initial position. You’ll most likely have to wear them at night, but everyone’s treatment is different so make sure that you’re speaking to your dentist or orthodontist about your aftercare.
